ABOUT OSITA

WHO AM I?

Osita Onugha, M.D., is a board-certified surgeon and assistant professor of thoracic surgery at the John Wayne Cancer Institute. Dr. Onugha practices all aspects of thoracic surgery, including procedures for benign and malignant conditions of the lung, esophagus and mediastinum. He has a particular interest in minimally invasive techniques that leave small scars, and has extensive experience in treating thoracic surgical conditions using video-assisted thoracoscopic surgical (VATS), robotic assisted thoracic surgery (RATS), laparoscopic and bronchoscopic approaches. He developed a new procedure that he calls extra-thoracic VATS to treat chest wall conditions like rib fractures with minimally invasive surgery.

While in training, Dr. Onugha became the first cardiothoracic fellow to be awarded the prestigious Excellence in Teaching with Humanism Fellow and Residents Award. During his training at Stanford, he helped design a novel catheter that detects and treats infections. He was a named inventor on multiple invention disclosures and has two filed patents.

He is the creator of the Surgical Innovation Lab at the John Wayne Cancer Institute. Its current projects include: using 3D printing for chest wall reconstruction after surgical resection, using wearable technology as a diagnostic preoperative/postoperative tool, using machine learning to better understand lung cancer, and studying the uses of novel circulating tumor DNA (liquid biopsy) in lung cancer.

He has co-authored several book chapters and manuscripts, and has presented at multiple national conferences.
